Fulcrum's Racing Zero Competizione's are their top aluminium wheelset, with superior quality hubs and special high strength aluminium, giving them a considerable competitive edge. The rims are made from incredibly strong and durable 6082 aluminium, specified for high-stress applications. To significantly reduce the peripheral weight of the rims they are triple and “square” milled for augmented reactivity and a reduction in overall weight. Thanks to Fulcrum's MoMag technology the rims on the Competizione's don't have any spoke holes, producing a uniform and therefore stronger rim that doesn't need rim tape, reducing weight. The Competizione's spoke nipples are placed in the sealed rim via the hole for the valve stem and are then guided into place using an external magnet. The rear rim is 30mm deep for improved power transfer with the front rim being 27mm deep for greater reactivity. Both rims are designed with counter weight opposite their joints to make sure that the weight on opposite sides of the wheel is the same for smooth and consistent rolling. The Racing Zero Competizione's have an exclusive rim/spoke coupling system so they can use lighter and stiffer aluminium spokes, with the unique nipples aligning properly with the hub for equal tensioning across the wheel. Fulcrum's engineers have also redesigned the housings for the spokes and hubs, ensuring that the spokes will never lose their initial tension, boosting their longevity considerably and keeping them in optimal aerodynamic position too.
The Competizione's are designed with 2-Way Fit, Fulcrum's ingenious system which means the Competizione's can be fitted with either a clincher tyre or a tubeless tyre. Fulcrum have developed the technology for a tubeless ready tyre to be fitted without sealant, which stands as a good testament to the quality of the fit and seal of the rim, although we would always advise riding with sealant for extra puncture protection. Going tubeless has many benefits including lower rolling resistance, for faster and smoother riding. Additional puncture protection, as well as tubeless tyres not suffering from sudden deflation when punctured, which is much safer. There's also no risk of pinch punctures as there is no inner tube to get damaged. The option to remove the tubeless valve and set them up as regular clinchers adds versatility.
The Competizione's hubs are the first in Fulcrum's range with their top level Ceramic Ultimate Level Technology bearing system (CULT). Fulcrum's CULT hubs use ceramic bearings which are incredibly smooth, with Fulcrum claiming they are up to nine times smoother than standard bearings, for significantly improved performance. Ceramic bearings are also lighter and require less maintenance. The Competizione's hubs are carbon fibre for extra stiffness, strength and weight reduction. The rear hub's aluminium flange is oversized on the drive side for increased torsional strength, to benefit longevity and power transfer. The freehub is plasma treated to make the aluminium very hard-wearing, increasing the lifespan of the Competizione's, whilst also allowing the aluminium on the freehub to be much thinner for reduced weight.
