The Fizik R3B shoe has been one of our most successful shoes to date. This is thanks to it's excellent balance of fit, comfort and power transfer at it's hotly contested price point.
With the development of the Infinito R1 and the huge success of Fizik's Volume Control fitting system that is adaptable to fit a wide range of foot types, the R3 has undergone some large revisions for the 2018 season and is set to become as popular as it's forbear.
While the Aria R3 shoe is a far cry from it's predecessor, it is essentially a revision of Fizik's R1B, the top of the range shoe before the release of the newInfinito R1,and this is a very good thing.
The Aria R3 moves away from the single Boa and single velcro strap closure of the R3B and adopts the dual Boa IP1 closures of the R1B and Infinito. By doing this, the Aria R3 can now take advantage of Fizik's Volume Control approach to fit. Volume Control is Fizik's way of creating an adaptable upper that allows the accommodation of almost all foot types. A dual-Boa IP1 closure sits to the outside of the shoe and each dial is used to independently adjust and tighten the upper and lower parts of a 'split' upper. This allows for micro-adjustable tailoring of the shoes' fit while the off-set nature of the upper, means that aerodynamics are optimised. Boa closures have been around for several years and their ability to spread pressure over a broader area ensures less numbness and keeps blood flow around the foot from being restricted, as is often the case with ratchet and strap variants. The use of plastic loops for the wire laces, further reduces pressure points on the top of the foot for even greater foot comfort. The Aria features an updated 'Enhanced Volume Control' which extends the split upper further into the toe-box for even greater tailoring of the fit.
The Upper is manufactired from Microtex - the same material as found on the company's saddles and Infinito shoes. Microtex strikes an excellent balance of all-season breathability, durability, flex, low weight and support. The fabric is 1.2mm thick and laser perforated and has no seams that can lead to pressure points or areas of irritation through rub. The result is a pliable upper that cleans up well and that adds to the comfort of the shoe.
The Aria R3 features the out sole of the R1B, a uni-directional carbon structure that simultaneously reduces weight and adds lateral stiffness to offer the rider optimal power transfer to the pedals. The sole is vented to manage heat and moisture and in combination with Fizik's insole helps to keep the foot environment stable. The discreet toe stud and removable heel pads lend purchase when off the bike and protect the sole from scuffs and damage.
Handmade in Italy and finished with subtle detailing, the Fizik Aria R3 is a beautiful shoe to look at and raises the bar at the price point in terms of aesthetic, comfort and performance.
